Advent and Christmas Services

2012 December 3

Service for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Sunday, December 23, 9:30 am

Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a good friend in her cousin Elizabeth–someone who would take her in, someone with whom she could be herself, in whom she could confide.  Perhaps it was from the nurture of this relationship that Mary became comfortable enough with her predicament to sing about it: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.  Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed.”

In this service, we will consider Mary’s witness, and look upon her face, as artists and crafters have portrayed her.  We have asked members of the congregation who have manger scenes at home to bring the Mary figure to church with them, and place it on the communion table. We hope you’ll come to this last Advent service, and, if you have a Mary figurine, bring it along.

CHRISTMAS EVE Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols, 7 pm

This service is planned in the English tradition which began after the armistice of WWI at Kings College, Cambridge, with readers from the congregation, classic carols and anthems by the choir.  There is usually a packed sanctuary, so you will want to come early.

PLEASE NOTE:  There will be real candles for those who are at least 10 years old…and buckets of water and wool blankets at each corner of the sanctuary and the balcony in case of emergency.
